The pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan) is a perennial legume from the family Fabaceae.  Since its domestication in the Indian subcontinent at least 3,500 years ago, its seeds have become a common food in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. It is consumed on a large scale in South Asia and is a major source of protein for the population of the Indian subcontinent.

        Pigeopea is a hard woody shrub,extensively adaptable to a range of soil types,temperature and  rain fall. It has a deep taproot system extending upto two meters with symbiotic association of rhizobium species and perform biological nitrogen fixation. stem branching pattern vary from bush type to compact upright type.The leaves are simple,opposite and caducous,flowers zygomorphic,terminalor auxillary racemes yellow in colour.stamens diadelphouswith light and dark yellow anthers.Fruit is pod seeds with 20-22% proteins and amino acids.
